ISE Foundation School and Work Listening
In this download, you can find a listening activity to help your students prepare for the ISE Foundation independent listening task 1 and the School and Work subject area. The students listen to a description of an office and match the things in it to spaces on a plan. There is an mp3 listening audio file and a PDF with the instructions, the plan and the audio script.
How to use the ISE Foundation School and Work Listening Activity
You can use the listening activity in a number of different ways.
- You could do the activity exactly as it is on the handout just see to how well the students can understand the text or to practise for the ISE Foundation independent listening task 1. Then, you could go through the vocabulary and help students with their difficulties,
- Alternatively, you could first brainstorm with the students some of the things they might find in an office – desk, computer, printer, etc. Then show them the plan and ask them to name the things that are represented with icons at the bottom. After this, once the students are prepared, play the listening text and get them to match the things in the office with the places on the plan.
- Once you have finished the listening, ask students to make sentences about where things are in the campsite. This will revise describing places and review all the vocabulary again.
- You can also ask students to listen again and make notes about what they hear. Then, in pairs, they try to recreate the text and write it out. This is called a dictagloss activity and it can help students to write more accurately as they have to recreate the structures they hear on the audio.
- Finally, you can ask students to imagine that this is their office. They can describe it and talk about what they do when they are in it using questions such as ‘How often do you work in your office?’ What do you do on the computer?’ ? etc. They could also imagine they have started a new job and write a letter to a friend describing their new office.
