GESE 9 Dreams and Nightmares Listening

GESE 9 Dreams and Nightmares Listening Activity

Have you ever wondered what your dreams mean? In this download, there is an independent listening task about dream interpretation to help Grade 9 students prepare for the GESE 9 Dreams and Nightmares conversation area and the GESE Grade 9 in general. It provides lots of good vocabulary and language of the grade and is a good way to reinforce the lexis of dreams and nightmares. The listening is about two different theories of dream interpretation and whether dreams mean anything, so it’s a good springboard to further discussion. It can also be used by students preparing for the ISE II or the ISE III exam and the independent listening task.

How to use the GESE 9 Dreams and Nightmares Listening Activity

There are several ways you can use this resource. Firstly, you can just use it as a listening exercise to help improve students listening skills. Ask students to listen once to find the gist of the listening. Then they listen and take notes about what they hear and report back the main ideas behind each of the dream interpretation theories. The answers can be found in the key on the PDF file. It’s a good idea to go through the listening together after listening twice and pick out any parts the students didn’t understand.

Next, you could get students to work in pairs and make notes while they listen. When they have listened twice, they work together to try and rebuild the text, as close to the original as possible. This is called a dictagloss activity and it helps students with their sentence formation and with reinforcing the language of the grade. Probably, you should just use one section of the listening for this activity or it will take too long and be too difficult.

Finally, you can also use the text as a springboard for discussion. After reporting the main ideas of the theory, ask the students to discuss which they agree with and which they don’t agree with. They could also write an essay about dream interpretation and their opinion of it.

We hope you like this listening text. The download below contains the listening in an mp3 file and a pdf with the audio script and the answer key. Click on the red button to download.
