GESE 7 Education Lesson – An integrated skills lesson

GESE 7 Education Lesson

In this download you can find a lesson to help students prepare for Trinity’s GESE 7 exam and the Education subject area. In this lesson, the students read about the education system in England, compare it to their own education system, and also think and talk about global educational issues.

How to use the GESE 7 Education Lesson

Part 1 – education systems

The lesson starts with a pre-reading speaking task where students talk about their own education system and the stages of learning there are within in. This introduces the topic of the reading text, which is a description of the English education system. The students read through this text quickly in order to discover if there are any similarities and differences between the two systems. After this, they read again more carefully and complete a table about the system in England. They can use this table to summarise their own education system as well, and then they think about and answer some speaking questions comparing and contrasting the two systems. The students may be asked to talk about their education system in the GESE 7 exam, so they should be encouraged to use the language from the text and talk about their own experiences and opinions in as much detail as possible,

The lesson plan doesn’t include a writing task, but it may be useful to ask students to write a short descriptive text about their own education system, similar to the text about the English system, at the end of this section. This would consolidate the language they have used in the previous tasks.

Part 2 – global education issues

The second part of the lesson deals with global educational issues. There are a number of educational statistics for the students to consider and they have to discuss which is the most serious or worrying. Following this, students work together to produce a short presentation which focuses on one of the statistics and how the problem could be solved. This should help students to discuss wider educational issues and also interpret an infographic (a useful skill for those students who will go on to study for an ISE exam). Remember to include a feedback session after the students have given their presentations :)

You could also include a writing task at the end of the lesson – students could write an article about why some children face barriers to their education today (drawing from the information in the infographic) and what could be done to help more children obtain an education.
