GESE 3 Giving Directions and Places in the Local Area – A ‘Treasure Hunt’ activity
Here is a fun activity to use with your Trinity Grade 3 students to practise the GESE 3 Giving Directions and Places in the Local Area language. Furthermore, the activity also includes a revision of jobs and things you can buy in shops. It’s in the form of a treasure hunt and is super-fun!
In the download below, you can find a map of a town with the names of many places in the local area: bank, cinema, supermarket, school, town hall etc. In addition, there is a worksheet with directions and instructions the students have to follow. They start at one place on the map and then follow instructions to reach the next place. Once they know the place, they have to write down the answer to a question about it, for example, they have to say who works there, what you can buy there, what you can do there, etc. It’s a race to see who can complete the answers first :)
How to use the GESE 3 giving directions ‘treasure hunt’ activity
- Put the students into pairs or small groups.
- Explain the activity – they have to follow the instructions and complete the blanks as fast as they can. The first pair or group to finish everything correctly is the winner.
- You might want to do the first instruction as a class so that they understand what they have to do.
- When the first pair has finished, they show you their answers and you check them while the other pairs continue. If they have any wrong, mark them as incorrect and send them back to try again.
- Continue until a pair finishes everything correctly!
- There is also a blank map included. Once they have finished the treasure hunt, the students can make their own. They add their own places in the local area to the map and write some clues for other pairs to follow.
- Alternatively, they can make their own maps and then work in pairs to ask and answer ‘How do you get to the…?’ and practise giving directions.
